Today I sailed through the Panama Canal, and watched The Bucket List. Not bad for a day!
I never really understood how the Panama Canal worked….now I have an understanding of it from the bow of a ship! It’s a feat of engineering! If you ever get the chance to see it I would encourage you to go. More Pictures to come on a new page I will start soon for Pictures I’ve taken. (I promised my Mom I wouldn’t sleep through the passage and would take pictures….see Mom…I kept my promise!)
After my daily duties were completed I had some down time so I popped in the movie which has been sitting on my desk racking up late fines. The Bucket List. GREAT film and really makes you think. I started a list several years ago while in college which I simply called, 50 things I want to do before I die…hahaha, I think bucket list sounds better and I will be refining the title on my list soon! I guess I can cross of going through the Panama Canal!
One of the scenes in the film revolves around the questions which are said to be asked at the gates of Egyptian Heaven. 1) Have you led a joyous life? 2) Have you brought joy to others?
As I get older and begin to choose my path in life (although my Mother would probably say that I’m still looking for it) I find myself thinking about these very questions. My goals continue to evolve year by year. When asked even 5 years ago about my goals the answers were different. I struggle often with striking the balance between directing energy towards reaching goals (primarily career goals) versus just going with the flow and seeing what happens. If I live a ‘joyous life’ but never reach the goals I spent many years training for and LOTS of money on tuition…have I somehow failed? I’m sure the answer is no, but that fact still doesn’t make me think about it any less. I suppose we all pass through this life with some form of regret, or wish that we could have done something or other differently…I guess that’s human nature and the lifelong battle against the clock!
For now I’m sticking with just going with the flow and trying to keep things interesting/exciting/adventurous…maybe even joyous!
As far as bringing joy to others…I try to do that every day! I try to do at least one good deed daily. Even the smallest of gestures can change the course of someone’s day; or if you’re lucky, even their life. You never know which of your actions towards someone else might be their catalyst for change.
So, if you haven’t already seen the movie, put it on your list. And if you want some light reading pick up the book with the same title, ‘The Bucket List’ which shows the bucket lists for various celebrities and people of importance of varying ages. PLUS, the proceeds from the book go to Charity…cancer research I believe.
Do you have a bucket list!? Should I post mine?
